Speed Networking
We all know the power of our professional networks, but it is sometimes a challenge to build those networks intentionally. This speed-networking session will provide the structure needed to meet a lot of people in a short time, share relevant information, and overcome shyness or nerves. This session is also set up to bring people together whose paths might never cross otherwise. Facilitators will get the ball rolling, and participants will spend the rest of the session in short, one-on-one conversations with other participants.
*Remember to bring you business cards.

The Future is in the Funding: Legislative Advocacy for Law Librarians
The law library that does not rely on outside funding is rare. In Kansas, a portion of court docket fees provides the majority of operational funding for county law libraries. What do law librarians do when they learn of legislation that threatens their revenue stream? They get involved in the political process and learn quickly how to write opposition statements, find supporters, and advocate. Their libraries’ future depends on funding.

‘The Next Big Thing’ is Here: Empirical Legal Research Support Services
Empirical legal research is a significant and growing portion of legal scholarship with potential to influence legislation, policy, and the judiciary. Law libraries of all types may find that supporting empirical research – from identifying data sets to helping analyze data to archiving results – is a requested service from some patrons. In this presentation, we share results of a nationwide survey conducted on the extent and nature of empirical research services provided by academic law libraries. As the requests for these services increase it will also be imperative that court, firm, and other types of law librarians understand basic support mechanisms.

Broadened Horizons: How Trans-Institutional Librarian Exchange Visits Aid Professional Growth
Most people will agree that exposure to different experiences helps you grow, and by extension it seems logical to conclude that exposure to different kinds of law libraries can help law librarians develop professionally. But how can someone newer to the profession or someone who has been in the same job for years get that experience without switching jobs? This program will explain the concept of trans-institutional exchanges, discussing their benefits to the participating individuals and institutions. We will talk about different models of trans-institutional exchanges, how to identify opportunities for these exchanges, and how to get buy-in from the different parties involved. General concepts and frameworks will be discussed as well as the personal experiences that inspired the presentation (which is to say, we've done it, it was great, and we think it might be great for other people too!)

Learning Outcomes and Assessment Under New ABA Standards 302, 314, and 315
New ABA Standards 302, 314, and 315 require law schools to establish learning outcomes for measuring competency in several areas including legal research. Although learning outcomes have been used for years in higher education, they are not widely used in law schools. The first part of this program will introduce participants to the new standards and learning outcomes generally. Then, panelists will share their own experiences with developing learning outcomes and assessment plans at both the institution level and for legal research instruction specifically. The role of the AALL Principles and Standards for Legal Research Competency will also be discussed.

Bridging the gap between librarians and technologists
Many librarian positions have emerged in the recent years where technology plays a big part in the job description. While the titles might differ, the duties remain the same and demonstrate a growing need of an advanced technological skill-set to lead the libraries in the digital world of knowledge.
However, having a digital librarian with the desired new skills might not be enough as most libraries still rely on a broader information technology service and follow their requirements and rules. The panel will discuss common challenges that law libraries are facing when it comes to implementing new digital initiatives and how they manage their relationship with the main IT service.

How Does it Really Work; or is it Possible to Serve two Masters? Making the Case for the Dual Reporting Structure in Academic Law Libraries
Many law libraries are thinking about or have been centralized into the university library system. What is driving this change? Is it about economics? How does it work from the inside out? How do you create buy-in? What is the impact on the staff and director when a library goes through "the change?" All of these questions and others will be discussed during this program. As others look toward having this happen or not happen at their institutions, some fears can be avoided by looking at the pros and cons of this trend. We will look at the report created by an AALS Committee on Libraries and Technology formed to examine the benefits and risks to law schools when library management is transferred from the law school to a university library system.

Many librarians use social networking platforms for professional networking purposes, either for ourselves or on behalf of our employers. As platforms evolve and change, our approaches to it should change also. Part I of this session will provide tools for effectively communicating and engaging with others on Facebook and Twitter and would be helpful for anyone interested in marketing with social media tools. Part II will move to round tables where the attendees will have a chance to work with their own social media efforts, asking questions of the presenters and other media managers and providing their own advice and experience in turn.

The Catalog is Dead, Long Live the Catalog
The last ten years have seen progressive changes in library catalogs and cataloging: RDA, FRBR and FRAD, Bibframe, Linked Data, Folksonomy, Faceted Search, Discovery Layers. Many of these changes are only slowly being implemented and some have already come and gone. Do these changes truly make for improved services to our users? What changes are necessary, and once identified, how can smaller law libraries with limited budgets and shrinking tech services staff, keep up? This session will review the current state of catalogs and cataloging with the goal of offering practical implementation strategies for law libraries in the heartland.

Shepard For a Day: A Novel Class Exercise For Teaching Citators
A novel class exercise focused on citators was piloted in the Advanced Legal Research course at nine law schools including Vanderbilt, Nebraska, Columbia, Stanford, and Cardozo. The assignment tasked students with walking in Frank Shepard's shoes for a day. The exercise enabled students to experience directly the challenges and compromises inherent in condensing nuanced case relationships into citator entries. The session will discuss the pilot project, including the logistics of implementing the assignment and the (largely positive) faculty feedback.
